The DMC is happy to announce that AmeriCorps member Abby Holcombe has joined our team! Abby will serve as an AmeriCorps member at the DMC for 2020-21 thanks to the YWCA of Central Alabama’s “Building Communities, Bettering Lives” program. We are so thankful to the YWCA of Central Alabama for partnering with us to bring AmeriCorps to the Mathews Center!
Abby is serving at the Mathews Center in support of the DMC’s civic education programming for students, educators, schools, and communities. She will be developing civics education resources for classrooms, in collaboration with K-12 educators from across Alabama. Additionally, she will assist with the planning, development, and implementation of the DMC’s youth civic-skill-building forums, teacher workshops, and civics education summits.
Abby was born and raised in Alabaster, Alabama. She received her bachelor’s degree in Communications with a double emphasis in Public Relations and Marketing from Mississippi College. While there, she chartered a nonpartisan club to facilitate productive dialogue with students on campus about local issues. She also worked with the First Lady of Mississippi on a campaign to improve literacy across the state. After graduation, Abby worked for an organization that does professional fundraising for elementary schools; she traveled to schools across the state for two years teaching character and fitness lessons to students.
Welcome to the team, Abby! We’re excited for a wonderful year of service at the Mathews Center. If you’d like to get in touch with Abby or send her a note of welcome, you can email her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
