Welcome 2022 Innovators in Civic Education Fellows!
On August 3rd, the David Mathews Center for Civic Life hosted the fourth annual workshop of the Innovators in Civic Education Fellows. Teacher Fellows assist the DMC in educational programming by providing valuable insight on how to create the most relevant and useful resources for educators, both in the classroom and the community.
Two phenomenal educators joined the DMC team in Zoom sessions to receive moderator training, share their perspectives, and obtain deliberative learning resources. Learn more about our 2022-23 Teacher Fellows below:
Imeka Evans: 7th Grade Social Studies, Huffman Middle, Birmingham City Schools
Imeka is a native of Alabama. Her employment with Birmingham City Schools began in 2005 and she has taught grades 6 – 8. She is a mother of two and has a grandchild coming soon!
Imeka looks forward to continuing her journey in education by learning and implementing more innovative ways to teach.
Liz Shults: 10th Grade Honors ELA & AP Seminar, Oak Mountain High, Shelby County Schools
Liz is a National Board Certified Teacher of 10th Grade English/Language Arts as well as AP Seminar. She has taught High School ELA for ten years and is an active member of the National Council for Teachers of English.
She is passionate about independent reading and finding ways to feature new voices in familiar stories.
DMC Executive Director Rachel Mosness conducted a deliberative discussion training with the Teacher Fellows using the Bullying: What is it? How do we prevent it? issue guide. DMC Education Director Zara Greene shared a presentation from 2021 Teacher Fellow Amber Broadhead in which Mrs. Broadhead shared the many ways she has successfully incorporated Inquiry Based Learning and Oral History lessons/projects in her classroom. Rachel concluded the workshop by providing an overview of DMC programming and the pivotal role the Teacher Fellows will fulfill over this next year.
